 "I Don't Believe it" was voted the best TV Catchphrase in a recent poll.  But why is it so famous?  It certainly wasn't intentional, just a required response to the every day pains that Victor happens across.

"You can bloody well go to hell" could have easily been the catchphrase.
 

Mrs Merton reminds Richard Wilson how much the catchphrase has been remembered by the nation.

Victor was so nationally accepted because his problems were our problems.  He took up the national cause.

Everyone has a Victor moment where an unbelievable situation strikes and Victor Champions the cause. 

 
 

From Car Mechanics to British Telecom Victor strikes for the good of us all.

Britain isn't known for complaining so who else can we rely on?

One Foot in the Grave was quite a dark comedy and that's what made it stand out from the rest.  It searched our inner souls through the darkest moments that each of us suffers.  Victor managed to portray each of us when we fear the worst or expect the worst.  Usually we are right.

 

Unfortunately, some of the fans aren't quite all there... and get quite upset by the death of the animals within the series.

From the poor dead Robin to the Frozen stray pussy.  Things certainly don't  come at opportune moments in the Meldrew household.  The complaints came flooding in and mostly were aimed at the actors for some unknown reason (ok, we all know the reason - some people are just plain mad!)
 

David Renwick admittedly wrote about the more dark and morbid parts of everyday life but it was our life and we could all associate with the painful strikes that came Victors way.

The theme tune, written by Eric Idle, is perhaps the most memorable part of the show along with the catchphrase.

 

It was cheesy and catchy.

Victors wife endured it all, including putting ralgex on Victors back when he needed it.  Why?  Because they were in love.  And why not?  Age shouldn't stop people being.  The only thing that stops working properly is the body.  The brain carries on long after the body starts creaking.
